Qeshm Doors

Qeshm, an island that sits on the Iranian side of the Persian Gulf. Abdulmughni's photographs are of the small fishing village of Kaseh Salakh made during the celebration of Nowrooz Sayadeen (fishermen’s new year), a day of merriment where by local inhabitants refrain from fishing or eating fish, instead spending the day swimming, acting, and cooking. Huda intimately captures the essence of the island; simple metal doors, whimsically adorned with designs, patterns, and vivid colors are entryways into the lives of Qeshm’s inhabitants. Each door tells a story; some are a nod to the island’s seafaring past while others celebrate the islands flora and fauna. Images of islanders - young and old - swimming in the island’s turquoise waters remind us of a simpler time. Women and young girls draped in colorful garb inhabit the colorful landscape. Ultimately, it is Huda’s unique way of seeing the world that draws us in. Neither documentary nor traveler, hers is a style that transcends genre. She becomes part of the landscape, absent but present. Her lens is welcome, it is anything but obtrusive.
