Forming a series of typologies, Emirati artist, photographer and graphic designer Hussain AlMoosawi has been documenting the UAE’s building facades. If you saw his exhibition at Gulf Photo Plus, Facade to Facade, you probably stared at those perfectly symmetrical facades, scratched your head and wondered, “How does he do it?”
After spending several years living and working in Australia, he was motivated to document the amazing changes he witnessed in his country each time he travelled home. Hussain’s project has developed a visual classification system for buildings in the UAE, regardless of their type, scale and age. The symmetry and repetition of shapes and patterns keeps the viewer cycling over the image, floor by floor, considering the meaning of any variation found.
In this photo walk Hussain will take you through the conception of the series as a method for documenting the UAE’s architectural heritage. You will gain an insight into the technical expertise Hussain employs throughout his images, focusing tightly on the building facades and eliminating external data such as geographic and situational context. Journey out into the metropolis of Abu Dhabi at sunset, in search of some of Hussain’s favourite buildings, while observing his complex and precise approach to architectural documentation. You will learn first-hand the challenges of working with light and the best times of the day to shoot for different buildings and their angles. Images captured, you will return to Warehouse421 for a demonstration of Hussain’s masterful post-production to the final image.
