Based in Palestine
Ismail Abu Hatab (@ismailabuhatab) was a Palestinian photojournalist, filmmaker, and founder of ByPa (@bypa.bypalestine). Born and raised in Gaza City, he dedicated his life to documenting the reality of the Gaza Strip, its people, its struggles, and its resilience.
On June 30, 2025, Ismail was killed by an Israeli airstrike. From the early 2000s, he began photographing daily life under occupation, turning his lens toward both the ordinary and the devastating.
By 2008, he was freelancing for local outlets. In November 2023, while covering Israeli airstrikes from the Al-Ghafari Tower, he was seriously injured, yet he returned to the frontlines to continue his work.
In 2025, his exhibition Between Sky and Sea was shown in Los Angeles, Chicago, and London, carrying his haunting question to the world: “Don’t you see?”
