Memories of Satwa

Memories of Satwa is a photographic memoir documenting one of Dubai’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods, Satwa, which is now on the brink of gentrification. The book, compiled by photographer Jalal Abuthina, offers a visual archive of the area over the past decade, capturing rare images of its residents and landmarks, some of which, like the Emirati neighborhood of Al Shabia, have since been demolished.

The book also includes a historical introduction by Professor Yasser El Sheshtawy from the Urban Research Lab at UAE University. Featured on CNN’s "Connecting the World" and praised by publications such as The National and Harpers Bazaar Art Arabia, the work highlights the transformation and loss of this once-thriving community.

Now on the brink of gentrification and urban re-planning. Memories of Satwa is a photographic memoir of one of Dubai’s oldest and most popular neighbourhoods. Combined with photographs captured and compiled by photographer and long-time Dubai expat Jalal Abuthina, this book also features a historical introduction to the area by Professor Yasser El Sheshtawy of the Urban Research Lab, UAE University of Al Ain. "Memories of Satwa" includes rare images of residents and parts of Satwa that have been documented over the past decade, with some of the areas featured (such as parts of the Emirati neighbourhood of Al Shabia) now completely demolished. In May 2016, images from the book were featured on Becky Anderson's "Connecting the World" show on CNN international and since it's launch has received an overwhelming amount of positive reviews from several major news and art publications in the country such as The National and Harpers Bazaar Art Arabia to name a few.
