Minolta X-700

The SLR that sold a generation on Minolta glass.

The X-700 is the camera that converted more new 35mm shooters than almost any other SLR of the early 80s. Three exposure modes — Program AE for the day you don't want to think, Aperture priority for everything else, full Manual when you do — driven by a clean center-weighted meter and one of the brightest viewfinders Minolta ever shipped. The Acute Matte focusing screen makes manual focus feel almost effortless.

It's a European Camera of the Year winner (1981) for a reason: nothing about it is precious. The body is light, the controls are obvious, the AE-Lock button works exactly the way you'd want, and the MD lens mount opens up the entire Rokkor system — which is, lens for lens, one of the better-kept secrets of the SLR era.

If you've been told to start on a Pentax K1000, consider this instead. Same beginner-friendly footprint, far more useful auto modes, a brighter finder, and the same access to great lenses for short money.

Character

What it feels like to shoot

The shutter is a soft thump rather than a slap — quieter than most SLRs of its era. The viewfinder is bright enough that focusing in low light feels easy rather than a guess. The exposure-lock button is right where your thumb naturally rests, which sounds small until you've shot a roll without one. Comfortable, light, easy to forget you're holding.

Born 1981

History of the Minolta X-700

Released in 1981 as Minolta's flagship manual-focus SLR, the X-700 was the last full-feature body Minolta made before the autofocus Maxxum line took over the catalog in 1985. Production ran until 1999 — an 18-year run that's almost unheard of in the SLR era. The X-570 and X-370 are stripped-down siblings; the X-700 is the one to look for.
