Minolta AF-E II

A small, honest mid-80s point-and-shoot.

The AF-E II is a compact, no-fuss autofocus 35mm from Minolta's mid-80s consumer line. Single fixed 35mm focal length, programmed AE, active autofocus, built-in flash, DX coding for film speed. AAA batteries instead of the lithium cells the more expensive compacts of this era used.

It's not a Hi-Matic and it's not a TC-1. It's the kind of camera you used to find in the bottom of a drawer, working perfectly because there wasn't much to break. Wide enough at 35mm to be useful indoors, light enough to forget you're carrying.

Character

What it feels like to shoot

Easy to forget you're carrying. The lens is sharp in the centre, softer at the edges (typical of cameras like this in the mid-80s). The shutter is quiet enough for street work. AAA batteries are a feature, not a bug — easy to replace anywhere in the world.
