Koni-Omega Rapid

Built for the wedding-and-press circuit. Still shoots like one.

The Koni-Omega is the camera that made wedding photography on 120 film actually shootable. 6×7 negatives — 4× the size of 35mm — through interchangeable Hexanon lenses, on a body with a rapid-advance lever that lets you crank through 10 frames a roll without taking the camera from your eye.

It's not a small camera. 1.85 kilograms. The body is press-camera grade — the Omega part of the name comes from the American Omega view cameras the company licensed parts from. The rangefinder is bright and coupled to whatever lens is mounted. The leaf shutter sits in the lens, not the body, which means flash sync at every speed and zero mirror slap (there is no mirror).

If you want a 6×7 rangefinder for the price of a fancy Pentax 67 lens, this is the move.

Character

What it feels like to shoot

Heavier than any 35mm SLR. The rapid-advance lever is the feature: a single push-pull motion advances the film and cocks the shutter, no thumb-crank time. The rangefinder is the kind that lines up edges — focus is unambiguous. Lenses click on with a quarter-turn. The shutter is a deeply satisfying snick.

History of the Koni-Omega Rapid

Manufactured by Konishiroku (later Konica) for Berkey/Omega in the US market from the early 1960s. The Rapid (1965) introduced the rapid-advance lever; the Rapid-M (1967) and Rapid 100 (1969) followed. Production ended in 1969 when Berkey switched suppliers. Konishiroku continued the platform briefly under the Konica brand.
