Photos of Home; A photography workshop about 'Home'

This photography workshop led by Fatema al-Fardan guides participants in an exploration of their representations of home, identity and belonging, opening a discussion about reality (homes that are solidly below our feet) and speculation (homes that are entirely in our minds).

The workshop dovetails GPP’s exhibition Past, Borrowed, featuring archival images, photographs, text, and audio works that suspend a social history shared between migrant communities to the UAE and their role in rooting its contemporary visual culture. A community open call for archival family photographs and accompanying text form a participatory element throughout the course of the exhibition, locating a cross-section of gulf narratives, borrowed and retold.

We welcome you to engage in group discussion at this workshop, and also encourage you to bring your own archival photographs to discuss at the workshop (not required to attend, but highly encouraged!)

About Fatema Al Fardan

Fatema Al Fardan is a multidisciplinary artist working with photography and performance. She is a current recipient of the Salama Bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (2021). She holds a dual BA from NYU Abu Dhabi in Economics and in Art and Art History: Art Practice (2020). Fatema has showcased her work in the Middle East Institute’s Art Gallery’s 2020 online art exhibition Art in Isolation: Creativity in the Time of Covid-19, and is currently showcasing her photography series, We Dance Asynchronously on the Same Stage, at Abu Dhabi’s Warehouse 421 as part of the ongoing group exhibition, Mina Zayed: Reflections on Past Futures. Al Fardan liked to hear stories more than she likes to tell them.
