im/pure

Lawrie Shabibi is pleased to present im/pure, a solo exhibition by Afghan/American artist Gazelle Samizay as the inaugural exhibition of our new Project Space, opening as part of the September's Alserkal Gallery Night.  im/pure is Gazelle Samizay's first solo exhibition featuring a new series of photographs and two video works.   Samizay uses video to immerse the viewer in imagined narratives inspired by her own reality, with photographs that act as snapshots of the experience, at times pausing the narration of traumas in time to allow for reflection. In her new series Samizay considers the notion of the passage of time and the human desire for release - of burdens, grief and past experiences - reflecting upon whether there is ever a true catharsis or if we carry these within us forever.

Gazelle Samizay was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and now resides in the US. Her photographs and videos have been exhibited in group shows across the US and internationally, including Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Pakistan, Morocco and the UK. Samizay is a recipient of the Princess Grace Experimental Film Honoraria, the 1885 Graduate Fellowship in Arts and Humanities, and the Northern Trust Enrichment Award, among others.  She received her Master's in Fine Arts in photography at the University of Arizona.
