GPP Talks with Alia Ali

In an open discussion, visiting artist Alia Ali and curator Anna Arutyunova will discuss the process involved in Ali's documentation of textiles from across the globe, and how the exhibition BORDERLAND came to fruition. The exhibition will run at Gulf Photo Plus (GPP) from March 13 - April 22, 2017.

Alia Ali is a Yemeni-Bosnian-American multi-media artist and visual storyteller who splits her time between New Orleans and Marrakesh.  For eight months she traveled through eleven regions documenting the artisans and processes involved in the creation of various textiles.  The resulting exhibition is a series of portraits that aim to question the barriers that too often alienate us from one another.

Ali's recent work was awarded the Alice C. Cole '42 Grant of Wellesley College, LensCulture’s Emerging Talent Awards 2016, the juror’s award of the Kuala Lumpur Photo Awards, and Gold Winner in a Fine Art Category of the Tokyo International Foto Awards.
