Emerging from the 2023 symposium of the same title, held in Dubai, the book explores the historical legacies, contemporary realities, and future possibilities of residential housing in the Gulf. Through over 20 essays, interviews, visual works, and case studies, it moves beyond iconic skylines to focus on houses, neighbourhoods, and cities as lived environments, situating housing at the intersection of culture, policy, and design.

By weaving together analysis, documentation, and forward-looking propositions, the book provides a critical foundation for rethinking the Gulf’s urban future in ways that are socially relevant, environmentally responsive, and rooted in local contexts.
