“I have never imagined that I would one day live the very stories I once heard about my homeland, Sudan, experiencing every detail of war. I was among the few who had the opportunity to tell a part of their story, while many others remained unheard, some lost to oblivion, and others buried with those we lost.” The Arabic word "Tadween" traditionally signifies the act of recording news, opinions, and emotions through writing, photography, audio, or video. However, after April 15, 2023, when war erupted in Sudan, this term gained a new, somber meaning, now associated with 'artillery bombardment' due to its military connotation in the region. The relentless sounds of 'Tadween' have become the harsh reality for over a year, reflecting the continuous shelling. This word now encapsulates the documentation of the stories, diaries, and events unfolding in the lives of Sudanese citizens during this tumultuous period. As a Sudanese and a photographer, navigating this new reality poses profound challenges. What is life like for people amidst the war? How do they cope, and how has the conflict altered the very fabric of their existence? The present shapes our future, yet many stories and events remain untold and unreachable due to the perilous circumstances.
Tadween has garnered international acclaim, earning Mosab prestigious awards and grants, including support from the Arab Documentary Photography Program (AFAC) in partnership with the Magnum Foundation and the Prince Claus Fund.
