Photo Walk | Karama: People & Places

Instructor: Raz Hansrod

As one of the oldest residential areas of Dubai, Karama is the destination to visit for a wide array of culinary offerings, retail bargains, and those irresistible classic neon lit signs. While practicing your street photography, you’ll learn techniques for difficult lighting conditions, all while taking in the history of Karama from your guide and your surroundings.

Workshop Date

Saturday, December 7, 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM
1-day workshop
AED 295.00
What's Covered

This Photo Walk runs from pre-dusk until the night⏤an opportunity to learn how to take successful street photographs that work with the available light, regardless of your camera or mobile phone. But there’s more to a successful photograph than a correct exposure⏤as one of GPP’s photography instructors, Raz will teach you the process behind taking images that go beyond the snapshot, sharing the technical skills and interpersonal techniques for working with your subjects and the environment.

In addition to the focus on photography, you’ll experience a route that is is laced with culture and history of this community, and learn how it has changed throughout the decades.

You will learn:

  • How to overcome technical obstacles when working in unfavorable lighting conditions, regardless of the camera or mobile phone in use
  • What to seek out when composing images that go beyond a ‘snapshot’
  • How to navigate asking ‘strangers’ to pose for a photograph, and how to take portraits that do justice to the subject
  • The history of Karama, from the building of the Sheikh Hamdan Colony in the 1960s until today

What to bring
  • A camera with a fully charged battery - whether it’s a mobile phone or a DSLR. All are welcome.
  • If you’re shooting with a camera, we recommend you bring 1 lens with a focal length of around 35mm. If you don’t have a lens that wide, bring one that you do have⏤your instructor will teach you how to work with it.
  • A spare battery, or battery pack charger if you’re shooting with your phone.
  • A thirst for adventure.
  • Please pack light and bring all of your belongings and gear in one small camera bag. We will be moving around constantly and thus large camera bags and lots of gear will be cumbersome. Leave your tripod at home! You’ll learn how to take long exposures using the legs you already have.

Please note: Due to traffic and very limited parking, we strongly recommend that you do not drive to the meeting point and take the metro instead. We start promptly on time and highly recommend getting to the meeting point 15 minutes early. Once the walk begins, we will not be reachable by phone and we won’t be able to coordinate with latecomers.
