Behind the Portrait

Community Exhibition | Call for Submissions

Submission Closed

GPP is inviting submissions from the photography community for our upcoming community exhibition, Behind The Portrait. We are encouraging photographers to submit their most meaningful images, and also to tell us in words the story behind the portrait.

Portraiture has come a long way from the very first daguerreotypes of 1839, and with time the definition of “Portrait” has evolved. Contemporary photography embraces a much wider interpretation of what was commonly understood to be a “portrait”. No longer bound to a standard head-and-shoulders composition, we can step back and examine the environment, or alternatively move closer and focus on a small detail. A portrait can be any image that we feel tells a visual story of identity, which may not include a human figure at all.

Submissions are open to all, including those based in the UAE as well as internationally, until August 15, 2017. There is no fee for entry and entries can be submitted online (see below).

The final selection will be evaluated after reviewing each image and text submission together and will be exhibited in the Gulf Photo Plus gallery, opening September 13 in Alserkal Avenue.

Where do

I submit?

Submissions are open to all, including those based in the UAE as well as internationally, until August 15, 2017. There is no fee for entry and all submissions can be done here.
Image Ownership/Usage/Copyrights

You will maintain 100% copyrights to your image(s) - we are merely displaying it at the exhibition. We will use selected images for press and promotional usage to promote the event.

Printing of Image

The images will all be printed at the GPP printing studio - we have experience and expertise in getting the best print out of a digital file. We will be happy to provide the print as-is at the end of the exhibition to the artists. Artists will have to collect the images themselves within two weeks of the end of the exhibition, and we will not ship or deliver the prints either locally or internationally.

Yes, for every image you submit to the open call, you must also include a story of approx 300 words.
We aim to have a wide range of photographs in the final show, so get creative and think about ways you can stand out with something different. Think about telling a story that no one has heard before through a portrait. Don’t limit yourself to a simple description; your accompanying text can be a poem, song lyrics, dictionary entry, map coordinates, etc.
Yes we would love that! However you must then also include an English translation.
You will only be able to use the submission form once, so you must have everything prepared at the time of submission. If you only have one image and story ready, and you think you might have more to submit later, wait until you have everything prepared before filling out the submissions form. You can submit up to 4 images, each with a story, but they must be submitted all together at one time.
If you have made up a story about your image, please indicate that the story is fiction.
Yes, you are welcome to edit your image, we are not applying strict rules on digital manipulation.
We will be emailing everyone that submitted by Aug 23 to let them know if they were selected or not.
It’s free to submit your work, and if you are selected, participation in the final exhibition is also at no cost to the photographer.
We plan to exhibit a story alongside each of the selected images, which means the final selection will be tight but we won’t know a final number until everything has been reviewed.
August 15th is the last day we will be accepting submissions.
