Creative Environmental Portraiture

Andrew Hetherington | Intermediate

Going into an unfamiliar location with an unknown subject and making a portrait is challenging to say the least. This workshop will explore how to deal with such situations; making compelling and creative environmental portraits while developing a cohesive and identifiable style.

The workshop will include taking portraits in interior and exterior locations. Participants will work on brainstorming idea’s and executing concept driven assignments as well as engaging in more seat of the pants scenarios all the while learning to make the most intriguing and unexpected images out of every situation.

During the course Andrew will demonstrate his signature lighting technique, how to think quickly with ones camera, deal with the inevitable curveball and ways to get the most out of your subject and setting whether they be celebrities or “real people”.

While various equipment and lighting will be covered, most of the time spent will focus on creating the portraits themselves; from planning, to execution, to editing.

Workshop discussions will also cover the business side of photography, getting your work in front of magazine editors, taking your vision and applying it to paid assignments, building and maintaining a successful career.

Come prepared to get out of your comfort zone, to work on refining your style and standing out in the world of environmental portraiture.
