The most rewarding part of the photographic process often comes when you find a project or theme you feel passionate about. In this documentary/street workshop designed for beginner to intermediate photographers, we brainstorm to find a story or theme from the streets of Dubai that inspires and excites you; and then spend time shooting, developing the idea and putting together a set of pictures where the sum is greater than the individual parts. “The more personal you make it, the more universal it becomes” to paraphrase Diane Arbus.
Your Dubai “Passion Project” will drive you to work hard, guide you past frustrations, through obstacles and push you towards a photographic place of competence and excitement you cannot predict. And it will be fun!
You can use an iPhone, mirror-less, DSLR or any image-capturing tool you like, as long as you know it well. The technical is the easiest thing to fix, so Steve will make sure you move past any tech problems so the camera fades to the background and you can concentrate on making strong images.
When working on one-storyline over time, it challenges and helps you to see new details, notice nuances and threads in the work that tie it together. This workshop will help you find meaning and purpose in your picture-taking process while learning about yourself and elevating your unique photographic vision. Your story or theme for the final portfolio and slide show could be a specific idea or as general as your “Love Letter to Dubai” capturing general impressions of the city and it’s people, places, food, light or architecture. Steve can personalize assignments for participants having difficulty finding focus. You will be encouraged to leave your comfort zone and liberating yourself from photographic routine.
A big part of this workshop is the “critique” session where we share a selection of work from the previous day. Critiques are of crucial importance and a “safe place” for group discussion. Then we hit the streets, a little wiser from the day before.
There will be a strong emphasis on editing and sequencing your final set of images. One of Steve’s goals for you in this workshop is to help clarify and focus your vision for a consistent point of view, as well as form a framework for future shooting. Regardless of the genre in photography you are most passionate about, this workshop will make you a better photographer.
