Self Portraits

Sara Lando | Confident Beginner

Self portraiture is an excellent photography exercise as it provides an opportunity to explore self-perception while remaining one step removed. You are the photographer, the subject and a spectator of the process at the same time and this dialogue can be easily turned into an amazing artistic conversation.

It can be challenging, awkward, weird, but also extremely fun.

There is a big advantage in being both the photographer and the model: you don’t need to read between the lines, you know when the subject is tired, uncomfortable or hates a particular shot. You also don’t need a release.

Self portraiture can be an extremely valuable tool to practice new techniques before you turn your camera towards your subjects, but can also be a creative path in itself

In this one day long workshop we'll be talking in detail about the technical side of taking a self portrait: you'll learn how to focus on a subject that isn't in front of the camera, how to get a decent framing of someone who's not in the picture and most of all we'll talk about all the creative possibilities that being a one-man-band opens for you. We will talk about posing and lighting, but this will not be a lighting class.

At the end of the day  Sara will show how she post produces her images and puts finishing touches on her photos: she'll cover basic retouching techniques as well as several dirty tricks that can make your life a lot easier.
