Adventures in Expressive Portraiture

Sara Lando | Confident Beginner

If photography is a language, portrait photography is a conversation between the photographer and the subject. Lighting and composition are the grammar we use to write, but if we want to tell a story, we need to have something to say and something needs to happen.

We can use our language to describe how the person in front of us looks, which is what we do most of the time when we take someone’s picture, but we can also use it to describe how they feel, or even shoot someone and describe how WE feel.

In this intense two days workshop we’ll talk about rules only to break them repeatedly. We will explore movement and blur, we will use traditional as well as unconventional lighting and we will use our cameras in ways that are not described in the manual they came with.

We will start from a concept and build a picture one layer at the time, adapting and adjusting to what happens in front of us. But most of all we will work towards building a connection with our subject, learning how to guide them and direct them.

You will work in groups as well as individually with a model. You’ll spend some time in front of a camera as well as behind it and you’ll be asked to assist and work hard to help other people get their photo. We are all in this together: it will be fun, it will be crazy and it will change the way you approach portraiture.
