Introduction to Motorsports Photography

Instructor: David Benson

This hands-on workshop is designed to introduce you to the basics of motorsports photography as you experience race day from the perspective of a media photographer shooting trackside and in the pits. During this workshop, you will hone your composition, panning, and editing skills as you work to fulfill a client's brief.

This workshop will give participants a glimpse into the typical day of a motorsports photographer. You will enter the Dubai Autodrome as a signed-on member of the media working in active pits and shooting on a race day at Dubai Autodrome. As such, a heavy emphasis is put on the safety of working on a live track as well as the skills required to shoot there.

You will be provided with a brief to supply race teams with a set number of images from the race weekend suitable for social media and press use. You will be instructed how to manage your day, be provided with theory on how to photograph race teams in the pits and on the track, have plenty of time to shoot at the track, and will be given time to post-process your images in order to have them ready by the deadline set by your client.

who should attend

You should have a thorough understanding of ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and how all of these relate to each other to achieve a correct exposure. If you are not familiar with these terms or currently shoot in Auto or P mode, we recommend enrolling for our Photography Level 1 workshop prior to attending Introduction to Motorsports Photography. If you have completed our Photography Level 2 workshop you will be equipped to benefit most fully from this workshop.

No prior motorsport experience is necessary to participate in this workshop, but this is a fast-paced workshop with an extended period of time spent walking around the track to work with composition, leading lines, and lighting conditions. In light of this, please note that you should be relatively fit and active, and you must be able to carry your gear with you for extended periods of time.
