The Business Primer for Photographers

Zack Arias

There’s an old joke in the photography industry that goes like this. How do you make a million dollars with photography? Start with two million. At some point in your pursuit of photography the thought about turning it into a business will cross your mind. During this session Zack is going to share many of his successes as well as his utter failures as he has built a sustainable photography business for himself. He will walk you through the process of building a foundation for your business, best practices for running a business, pricing, marketing strategies, and finding other streams of revenue to keep your ship afloat when things get slow. The photography business is saturated and highly competitive about a final product that can be highly subjective in the final value to the client. Zack will help you cut through the noise, show you what to stay focused on, what to not worry about, and how to build slowly and surely to a point that photography could very well become your day job.

Evocative Light: See it, Understand it, Create it!

Gregory Heisler

There are myriad photo websites, tutorials, webinars, and blogs. So many of them are focused on the gear (after all, that's what sells!). The stuff. "If I only bought that new modifier…" What matters even more than the how is the why. Once you begin to understand light, you can begin to see it better, enjoy it more, think in terms of it, and even make it happen when and where you want. It's the only thing your camera's sensor sees, so you want to use it expressively, not be at its mercy.

In this jam-packed intensive, Gregory will show many of his iconic portraits as well as share his thought process and demonstrate some of the underlying principles live onstage. Not just what he used and how he used it, but more importantly, why he chose to use it in the first place. After all, it's these decisions that ultimately shape our images. There are countless techniques, none of which substitute for vision.Come curious, leave inspired.

Sunday 20th September, 9.30am-1.00pm

Beyond Technique: Finding a Meaningful Path as a Photographer

David Hobby

So, you have a nice camera and you understand f/stops and shutter speeds. You might even be comfortable using light. Now what? Surely photography has to be about more than learning the next trick - or purchasing the next shiny piece of kit. What makes you happy as a photographer? Is happiness even your goal? What about money? Are the two goals mutually exclusive? What do you want to do with your camera? Do you even know? Do you want to change the world, or maybe just change yourself? This session won't be about composition, exposure or lighting (okay, maybe a little bit about lighting). Instead, we'll step outside our comfort zones and examine what is possible through our photography. This will require a change of perspective. It will mean challenging some long-held assumptions. It may cause you to change your compass point - or to create one for the very first time. And most important, to learn how to follow it.

Sunday 20th September, 2.30pm-6.00pm

The Assignment Guy

Joe McNally

In the course of a nearly 40 year career shooting for major editorial and commercial clients, Joe has developed a far reaching set of skills in response to shooting assignments ranging from Hollywood celebs to leading figures in the sports world to the cutting edge of science and the allure of pop culture. A resolute generalist, he has shot it all. In this fast paced session Joe will show work and the behind the scenes of that work, from BTS videos and stills to sketches and dialogue about lessons learned. He will then put those skills into practice, turning the stage and the theater into a location shoot, and walk his way through the process of finding a picture, assessing the location, judging the nature of the light to be brought to bear, establishing context, and leading someone’s eye through the foreground, middle ground and background of a photo.

It will be a very practical session, as Joe creates a scene with the use of one light, two lights, three lights….or perhaps more. He involves the audience, articulating his thought process out loud and answering questions while he literally “builds” a photograph. Pursuant to his notion that “there are no secrets in this business” he shows work, shoots pictures, answers questions and puts on display a wide range of the skills and knowledge necessary to stay alive as a photographer.

Things to do in Seattle

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE

There’s nothing quite like refreshing your passion for photography than a weekend full of inspirational talks and being surrounded by likeminded photographers. What more could you want to get those creative juices flowing! BUT don’t just leave it there… Pick up that camera and go and use all that newfound knowledge to explore the area. We here at GPP have picked our top spots to photograph in and around Seattle

  1. PANORAMIC PLEASURES
    • Space Needle. Yes it’s obvious, we know! Usually, we‘re always trying to find those hidden gems but sometimes those top tourist spots are that for a reason! So, grab your tripod and head up to the observation deck at the Space Needle for a 360 degree view of Seattle. The perfect chance to master those panoramic shots. We’d suggest to head there for sunset as the deck doesn't open until 09.30/10am. Opening times below:

      Mon – Thurs:           10.00 – 21.30
      Friday – Saturday:     09.30 – 22.30
      Sunday:                    09.30 – 21.30
      https://www.flickr.com/photos/livdahl/16827076375/in/pool-space-needle
    • Kerry Park. For a quintessential photo op head to this beautiful park for views of the Space Needle, Downtown Seattle and Elliott Bay. If you’re lucky you’ll get a glimpse of Mount Rainer looming above. Get as far right as you can looking South and for some incredible nightscapes arrive an hour before sunset and stay through to the evening.

    • Gas Works Park. This location boasts multiple vantage points of the city. Dedicate some time here, so you can explore and find your best angle. Our favourite is from the North end of Lake Union. If you can handle a 6AM wakeup then avoid the crowds by getting there for sunrise. It’ll be worth it, we promise!

  2. MOTHER NATURE AT HER BEST
    • Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Looking to master that perfect landscape shot? Then Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is the one for you. With it’s mirror glass lakes, alpine tress, snow-covered mountains you’ll be spoilt for choice. Whilst here don’t miss the famous 270ft Snoqualmie waterfall. Try and avoid the weekends in order to find some space on the observation deck, which is the best spot to shoot from.

    • Washington Park Arboretum. We’ve chosen one of the best times to be in Seattle, so to capture the beautiful fall colours of burnt orange, crimson red and every hue in-between, take yourself to this 200-acre park on the shore of Lake Washington.

    • North Cascades National Park. Step back into history and explore what was once the land of several American Indian tribes. Utterly wild, teaming with wildlife and framed with a spectacular gathering of snowy peaks, this spot will really test your photographic skills. With just a 2-hour drive from Seattle you can find yourself in this mesmerizing park. Channel the Ansel Adams within you!

  3. PEOPLE WATCHING
    • Pike Place Market. This 100-year old market is a photographer’s dream! From the tiny authentic details such as the market’s mascot, Rachel the brass piggy bank to the energetic fisherman lobbying their catch onto the cutting board. There a reason it’s called “the soul of Seattle”! Pike Place Market is always busy but to dodge the weekend masses head over one morning from Monday to Friday.

    • Capitol Hill. This is one of the hippest neighborhoods in Seattle and therefore attracts a lot of interesting characters frequenting the restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Visit on a Friday or a Saturday night when the atmosphere is at its best!
