Artist Statement

Planet X is a series Shafaati has been working on since December 2011 capturing the impressive architecture found in JBR, JLT, Deira, and Tecom, and creating his mirrored images. In describing the project Shafaati explained,

"I started street photography to break out of the monotonous routine that had taken over my life in Dubai. I’ve always been drawn to the construction sites around the city, each operating as if it were its own universe"

"During my walks I also began eyeing all the buildings, lots and lots of buildings with different structures, shapes, colors. Each had a very individual identity that allows it to stand alone, while also complementing the cityscape. It reminded me of the cultural diversity and myriad of nationalities here in Dubai. Every person could be an unknown planet. In this photo series I try to visualize each form separately - in isolation - and to show their peculiarity and beauty at the same time"
